Russell R. Lonser, M.D
Russell R. Lonser, M.D., was Chief of the Surgical Neurology Branch at the National Institutes of Heatlh before becoming Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurological Surgery at Ohio State University in 2012.
Dr. Lonser’s research interests include familial neoplasia syndromes and development of gene therapy for the treatment of nervous system diseases. He has authored over 350 publications. He has given over 300 invited talks. He received the Tumor Young Investigator Award and Mahaley Clinical Research Award from the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS)/Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS) Section on Tumors. He was the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors Bittner Lecturer and the American Academy of Neurological Surgery Edward H. Oldfield Lecturer. He received the 2023 Distinguished Service Award from the CNS. He is a co-inventor on a patent for methods for imaging of convection-enhanced delivery.
His contributions to organized neurosurgery include serving on the Executive Committee, as well as Treasurer and President of the CNS. He has served on the Executive Committee for the AANS/CNS Section on Tumors. He is the Secretary of the American Board of Neurological Surgeons. He is Treasurer of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery. He is Chair of the Washington Committee for the AANS/CNS. He was the head of the Research Subcommittee in Head, Neck and Spine Injury Committee for the National Football League for 10 years. He has been actively involved in the mentoring and training of over 40 neurosurgical fellows. He is on or has served the Editorial Boards for NEUROSURGERY (Associate Editor), World Neurosurgery and Journal of Neurosurgery. He is Consulting Editor for Neurosurgery Clinics of North America and is Associate Editor for NEUROSURGERY. He has edited 5 textbooks.
