Dr. Mahesh Prasad Bekal, M.Sc., Ph.D., is a CPRIT Postdoctoral Fellow in the Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery at The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.
His current research interest is to understand the intricate relationship between the gut microbiome and brain function, specifically concerning responses to radiation therapy. By delving into the impact of the gut microbiome and its metabolites on radiation-induced cognitive dysfunction, his work aims to identify potential therapeutic strategies to mitigate cognitive challenges in brain cancer patients undergoing radiotherapy. Additionally, he explores the role of the gut-brain connection in glioma treatment outcomes and investigates the impact of cancer therapies on the gut microbiome and metabolites, aiming to understand how alterations in the gut-brain connection can enhance outcomes for cancer patients.
