Prof. Manfred Westphal graduated from the Medical School at the University Hospital Eppendorf (UKE) and thereafter spent three years as post-doctoral research fellow oft he DFG in San Francisco in the Hormone Research Laboratory (C.H. Li) at UC San Francisco. After setting up the Laboratory for Brain Tumor Biology at the UKE, he began his residency with Hans-Dietrich Herrmann, obtained a full professorship and after having been offered the chairmanship for neurosurgery at the University Hospital in Düsseldorf was confirmed as chairman of neurosurgery at the UKE in 2003. His main interest has been translational research in neuro-oncology which is also well represented in the 350 peer reviewed scientific communications and which led to the conduct of several international phase III trials for glioblastoma as principal investigator. The other neurosurgical interest is in the field of vascular neurosurgery, where the main emphasis is the interdisciplinary treatment of complex lesions together with the partners in interventional neuroradiology. Due to his constant involvement in conduct and management of science, Prof. Westphal has served on the study section for neuroscience of the DFG for 9 years, is delegate of the EANS to the European Brain Council since 2004 and has been awarded the presidency of the European Congress for Neurosurgery in Hamburg 2021.
