Edward A. Neuwelt, MD is a Professor in the Departments of Neurology and Neurological Surgery, and the Program Director of the Blood-Brain Barrier and Neuro-Oncology Program at Oregon Health & Science University and the Portland Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Portland, Oregon. He divides his time between clinical work, primarily in the area of neuro-oncology including both operative neurosurgery and chemotherapy, and directing his research laboratory. His preclinical and clinical research is focused on three areas: delivery of therapeutics using blood-brain barrier disruption, magnetic resonance imaging techniques with novel contrast agents, and chemoprotection and chemo-enhancement for brain tumor therapy. Dr. Neuwelt has received continuous R01 funding support from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and a Veterans Affairs Merit Review Grant since 1979, and has received a Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award. He is the founder of the Annual Blood-Brain Barrier Conference, an NIH R13 funded meeting, which meets annually. He serves on the editorial board of The Journal of Biological Chemistry, Fluids and Barriers in the CNS, and The Journal of Clinical Oncology.
