Dr. Paula Schiapparelli is an Assistant Professor in the Neurosurgery Department at Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, FL, USA.
Dr. Schiapparelli's research is focused on understanding the mechanisms by which glioblastoma cells (GBM) migrate and invade the human brain. Her main project is to describe the mechanisms by which ion co-transporters (and their upstream regulating kinases) modulate the actin cytoskeleton to regulate cell shape, spreading and migration in glioblastoma. She is also developing local therapies using hydrogels and nanoparticles using rodent GBM models.
Dr. Schiapparelli received her Bachelor of Science in biology and biochemistry and her doctorate in cellular and molecular biology from the University of Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. Paula continued her training as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Research Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University under the mentorship of Dr. Quinones-Hinojosa.
In 2016, she joined the Neurosurgery Department in Mayo Clinic (Jacksonville, FL) were she assists directing the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Research Laboratory.
