As the Rose Ella Burkhardt Chair in Neurosurgical Oncology, he participates in clinical and basic research in addition to his busy clinical practice, which attracts patients internationally. Major thrusts of his research in neuro-oncology have included mechanisms of chemosensitivity in oligodendrogliomas and use of immunotoxins and immunotherapy to treat malignant glioma. He led the process for the Cleveland Clinic to be accepted as a full member of the National Cancer Institute’s Adult Brain Tumor Consortium, Brain Tumor Trials Collaborative and International Gamma Knife Research Foundation, of which he was recently elected Chair. He is the Clinic’s principal investigator in these efforts, as well as a number of industry-sponsored trials of brain tumor research.
He was elected to a five-year term on the Board of Governors of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, having served as President of the Staff a few years earlier. He has twice been Vice-Chair of Neurosurgery, was Director of Neurological Institute Surgical Operations, and serves on several leadership committees in Surgery and the Taussig Cancer Institute. For ten years he was Director or Co-director of the Residency Program of the Department of Neurosurgery and he continues his commitment to the training of young residents. He is admired by students and residents for his mature and progressive qualities as a teacher and mentor. His commitment to academic excellence has been recognized by his appointment to the rank of Professor of Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University and Professor of Oncology at the School of Medicine of Case Western Reserve University. He serves as the Associate Dean of Faculty Affairs for the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Chairs the Committee on Appointments and Promotions.
