Anindya Bagchi, PhD, is an Associate Professor at Sanford Burnham Prebys (SBP) Medical Discovery Institute, a National Cancer Institute designated Cancer Center based in La Jolla, California. His research focuses on the functional genomics of cancer, with an emphasis on elucidating the functional implications of genomic copy number alterations in cancer.
During his postdoctoral research at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, Dr. Bagchi discovered a novel tumor suppressor gene, Chromodomain helicase DNA binding protein 5 (CHD5), which maps to human chromosome 1p36. This work solved a decades-old problem of identifying a tumor suppressor at Hu1p36 (Cell, 2007; 128:459-475).
Before joining SBP, Dr. Bagchi was a tenured faculty member at the University of Minnesota, where he studied a key genomic copy number alteration found in many human cancers, the copy gain of Human 8q24. His group uncovered the role of a long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) PVT1 that is co-gained with, and regulates MYC activity in, the 8q24+ cancers. Dr. Bagchi has also participated actively in the development of the PVT1-MYC field (Tseng et al, Nature, 2014, 512:82-86; Sarver et al, Cell Cycle, 2016, 15:881-885; Hung et al, Nature 2021, 600:731–736; Tiwari et al, manuscript in revision).
