Michael Griessmair, MD, works as a physician in the Department of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology at the Technical University of Munich. He is doing research in the working group of PD Dr. med. Benedikt Wiestler. To date, much is known about intratumoral heterogeneity of glioblastomas. However, this is only a snapshot. The aim of his research is to understand the temporal tumor development and which factors finally determine the malignant histological and radiological phenotype.
He laid the foundation for his research on brain tumors in his doctoral thesis on the physiological role of ALDH1 and its contribution to the neoplastic transformation of Schwann cell tumors at the department of Neuropathology at the Technical University of Munich. In addition to his experience in basic research the clinical work strongly influences his research. Especially the updated WHO classification of CNS tumors leads to challenges for the diagnosis of brain tumors. Diagnosis by molecular analysis poses new challenges for radiology. In his current research, he aims to build bridges between basic science and applied neuroradiology.
