Syed Faaiz Enam, MBBS, PhD is a resident physician in the department of Neurology at the University of Texas Southwestern (UTSW). He originates from Karachi, Pakistan where he completed medical school at the Aga Khan University Hospital. He moved to the United States to start his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the combined program at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University and completed the PhD at Duke Unviersity. Near the end of his training, he conceived of and designed the approach behind 'cytostatic hypothermia' as a treatment to halt glioblastoma growth. He pursued this work in a post-doctoral position at Duke University. During this time he also received a Green Card under the National Interest Waiver program. Subsequently, he started his residency at UTSW. During the residency, he has continued to actively pursue his research and development of cytostatic hypothermia. He has received two internal grants to execute on the work (from the O'Donnell Brain Institute and from the Annette Strauss Center for Neuro-Oncology). In the meantime, he has also launched a company, Thermeutics, to ultimately bring the medical device to patients. He is aiming for a career that incorporates running a laboratory studying the mechanisms behind cytostatic hypothermia, leading a company to continue developing the technology, and taking care of patients in a dedicated neuro-oncology clinic.
