Sharon K. Michelhaugh, PhD, is a Research Scientist of the Onco-Engineeering Lab at the Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at the Virginia Tech. The Lab uses patient-derived cell lines, syngeneic and xenograft mouse models of primary brain tumors to study the tumor microenviornment and tumor-associated fluid flow in the brain. In vitro GBM models include glioma stem cells along with astrocytes and microglia in a 3D matrix the replicate the microenvironment at the normal brain/tumor interface. In vivo studies include MRI imaging to determine fluid flow in the brain, followed by corrrelative tissue studies.
