Victor Karwacinski, B.S., is a Research Technologist II in the Brat Lab at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine’s Department of Pathology. A distinguished alumnus of Loyola University Chicago, Victor graduated Summa Cum Laude with degrees in Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience, Biology, and Psychology. His research journey began during his undergraduate tenure, and following his graduation, he dedicated himself full-time to his project within the Brat Lab. Under the guidance of Dr. Daniel J. Brat and Dr. Tatiana Lobo, Victor investigates basic and translational research designs that seek to better understand the mechanisms underlying glioblastoma (GBM) treatment resistance and post-therapeutic recurrence. Specifically, he is interested in the contributions of GBM stem-like cells, tumor-associated macrophages, and hypoxia in reshaping the GBM tumor microenvironment to support the treatment-resistant cellular GBM phenotype and the enhanced post-therapeutic re-entry of quiescent glioma cells into the cell cycle. Through these rigorous studies, Victor hopes to identify potential markers for therapeutic targeting that can counteract immunosuppression. Outside of the lab, Victor is an avid skier, rock climber, and ultimate frisbee player. With roots in Poland, he loves visiting his home country and also enjoys exploring new destinations.
