Dr. Daniel Brat, the Magerstadt Professor and Chair of Pathology at Northwestern University School of Medicine and Pathologist-in-Chief of Northwestern Memorial Hospital, received his MD and PhD from the Mayo Medical and Graduate Schools and completed an Anatomic Pathology Residency and Neuropathology Fellowship at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Dr. Brat is a surgical neuropathologist with expertise in neoplastic diseases and a focus on diffuse gliomas. His work with The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) helped usher in a new molecular classification of diffuse gliomas that is incorporated into World Health Organization (WHO) diagnoses and the subject of College of American Pathologists (CAP) clinical practice guidelines. He also directs a basic and translational research lab that investigates mechanisms of glioma progression, including the contributions of hypoxia, genetics, tumor microenvironment and stem cells, using Drosophila and mice as models. He has over 25 years of clinical and research experience, has written more than 300 peer-reviewed manuscripts and reviews, and has mentored over 75 students, residents and fellows in the lab.
Dr. Brat has served in numerous leadership positions in Oncology, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, including President and Executive Council of the American Association of Neuropathologists; Board of Directors for the Society of Neuro-oncology; WHO Editorial Committee for Classification of Brain Tumors; CAP Council on Scientific Affairs; and Chair of the American Joint Commission on Cancer Expert CNS Panel. He is an elected member of the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians.
