My name is Balint Otvos, MD PhD, and am a current chief resident in the Department of Neurosurgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. Intracranial malignant and cerebrovascular maladies comprise some of the most difficult pathologies for a neurosurgeon to treat. Successful treatment of these challenging entities require both dexterous microsurgical skills as well as creative adjuvant non-surgical solutions targeted at the inherent biology. The interplay between the immune system and the neural axis has been demonstrated as a key mediator of disease pathology in both malignancies such as in glioma, and in cerebrovascular pathologies such as stroke. In efforts to therapeutically target these diseases, my focus has been to combine neurosurgical techniques and immune-targeted translational research.
