Dagoberto Estevez, M.D., is a PGY6 neurosurgery resident at UAB. He was born and raised in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. Prior to moving to the US, he worked as an English teacher in Honduras and served a mission in Guatemala for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. He graduated with University Honors from Brigham Young University, with a degree in Molecular Biology and a Minor in Hebrew. He subsequently attended Vanderbilt School of Medicine where he pursued an additional year of research funded by the NIH as a Fogarty Global Health Scholar and Vanderbilt Medical Scholar studying cancer epidemiology and gastric cancer in Central America under the Mentorship of Dr. Douglas Morgan. He led the establishment of the first population-based cancer registry and cancer survival study in Honduras. Dago has served in multiple leadership positions in his community as well as medical school and national organizations. Dago was Inducted to Alpha Omega Alpha (AOA) in 2017 and has served as a member of both his local chapter executive board and the national AOA executive board. During his residency, he received R25 funding through the NINDS to work on immunovirotherapy with oncolytic HSV-1 for the treatment of malignant glioma under the mentorship of Dr. James M. Markert and Dr. Gegory K. Friedman. During residency, he enrolled in the Advanced Research training In Science for MDs (ARISE-MD), pursuing a PhD in Neuroscience. He has successfully defended his dissertation and will be graduating in December. He plans on pursuing a fellowship in skull base surgery and a career in academics with a focus on neuro-oncology and surgery for brain and skull base tumors. Outside of neurosurgery Dago enjoys spending time with his wife and three kids, scuba diving, playing guitar, singing, video games, and reading.
