Dr. Leon Smyth (Ph.D, University of Auckland) is a postdoctoral fellow in Professor Jonathan Kipnis' lab at Washington University in St. Louis. He is interested in how the meninges and cerebrospinal fluid contribute to immune privilege. He has described how cerebrospinal fluid signals to skull and verterbral bone marrow to regulate hematopoiesis and immune egress to the meninges. He has also described structures of the arachnoid mater of the meninges which permit the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid and cellular trafficking to the meninges.
