Dr. Matthew Waitkus is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurosurgery at Duke University and is a Member of Duke Cancer Institute. His laboratory studies the molecular biology of brain tumors and seeks to identify new therapeutic targets and therapeutic strategies for inhibiting brain tumor growth. Prior to coming to Duke, Dr. Waitkus received an MS in Pharmacology from The Ohio State University and a PhD in Cellular and Molecular Medicine from Cleveland State University and the Cleveland Clinic. At Duke, Dr. Waitkus has led research on the impact of IDH1 mutations and ATRX mutations on glioma biology and the role of these mutations on the response to therapies. Currently, the central focus of his laboratory is understanding the interactions between genetic mutations, mechanisms of cellular immortalization, and the induction and resolution of DNA-damage in brain tumors.
