Steven Brem, MD is Professor and Director of Medical Student Education in the Dept. of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania. He has devoted his career to optimizing outcomes in patients with brain tumors through the introduction of advanced neurosurgical techniques such as brain mapping, tractography, connectomics, intraoperative fluorescence, viral oncolytics, chemowafers, and immunotherapy, in over 150 clinical trials. He is an internationally recognized neurosurgical oncologist, performing more than 5,000 craniotomies for brain tumors, and training numerous residents, fellows, and medical students. Dedicated to education, he has directed 10 annual brain tumor, CME programs at Penn and 5 CME programs at the SNO meetings. In 2021, he organized a satellite meeting with Dr. C. Hadjipanayis on intraop visualization and connectomics. He has maintained a laboratory for 30 years and is a recognized pioneer in the field of antiangiogenic therapy, with more than 15 highly cited papers in the field. Overall, he has more than 200 publications, is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neuro-Oncology and the Section Editor (Neurosciences) for Frontiers in Oncology. Together with Dr. Kalil Abdullah, he compiled a book on Glioblastoma. He chaired the NCCN Brain Tumor Guidelines Committee, 2006-2011 before coming to Penn, where he founded the Brain Tumor Center of Excellence, together with Donald M. O'Rourke, and is currently the Medical Director for the Center of Precision Surgery. He is a member of the CTSRMC (Clinical Trials Scientific Review Monitoring Committee of the Abramson Cancer Center. Dr. Brem is the Vice-President of CBTRUS, and a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the ABTA. He is a frequent reviewer of NIH grants, and is co-investigator on 4 NIH grants at PENN. He serves as the neurosurgery chair for the NRG BRAIN-010 protocol and the national study chair for the Glioma Connectome Project.
