Sandra Camelo-Piragua, M.D., is a Clinical Professor of Pathology, and Neuropathology Fellowship Program Director at the University of Michigan. Dr. Camelo-Piragua is very active in clinical care, fellow’s education, research, and administrative endeavors. Her research interest lies primarily in the development and implementation of different technologies that can allow for better visualization or interpretation of tissue, for diagnosis or treatment, including stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) microscopy, histotripsy, remote telepathology microcopy, and integration of digital images with artificial intelligence for predictive diagnosis. In addition, she also works in collaboration with basic researchers and physician scientists on projects related to neuro-oncology. For several years, Dr. Camelo-Piragua has collaborated with the neurosurgery department at her institution to study, validate and implement SRS microscopy in the workflow of neurosurgical specimens. The team has developed virtual images that resemble conventional histology, stimulated Raman histology (SRH), those images are amenable to standard histopathologic interpretation and used with machine learning algorithms to predict diagnostic categories. Dr. Camelo-Piragua is an active member in several institutional and national committees including Digital and Computational Pathology Committee at the College of American Pathologists and she serves as Chair of the Neuropathology Fellowship Program Directors Committee.
