Nicholas Butowski is a Full Professor and Neuro-oncologist in the UCSF Department of Neurological Surgery who specializes in brain/spine tumors, neuro-imaging, cognitive and rehabilitative neurology and complementary therapy. He serves as the Director of Translational Research in Neuro-Oncology, the Neuro-Oncology Fellowship Director, and Chair of the UCSF Cancer Center CNS Tumors Site Committee. Dr. Butowski serves as principle investigator on a wide range of clinical trials, including those with convection enhanced delivery (CED), surgical interventions, targeted agents, and immunotherapy. He is also active in translational research via the UCSF Brain Tumor Research Center Preclinical Core. As PI or co-Investigator on university, industry, and NIH-funded grants, he helped to create the groundwork for allied research and a preclinical and clinical trial portfolio at UCSF for patients with primary brain and spine tumors. He has also designed investigator-initiated trials including both surgical and non-surgical modalities. In addition, Dr. Butowski also a has particular interest and expertise in enriched patient clinical trials, phase I/II trials which administer agents to patients prior to and following surgery, and precision medicine clinical trials. Dr. Butowski earned a medical degree at the University of Illinois in Chicago, and completed a residency in neurology and a fellowship in neuro-oncology at UCSF. He is a member of the American Academy of Neurology, American Society of Clinical Oncology, and Society for Neuro-oncology.
